Public Counsel Finds Representation for Woman After Attorney Abandons Her

After paying an attorney $1700 to represent her in a bankruptcy case, a monolingual Spanish speaker found that her attorney had abandoned her. She came to the Bankruptcy Self Help Desk in tears and hoping to get some help. Public Counsel's Debtor Assistance Project ("DAP") placed her case with a bankruptcy attorney and helped her file a complaint with the California State Bar against her previous attorney.  Today, the client has a financial "fresh start."  Also, her former attorney is now listed on the State Bar website as "Not eligible to practice law."
