Public Counsel Celebrates National Adoption Day in Los Angeles

Adoptions for 130 foster children were finalized on Friday, November 19, 2010 as part of the 11th Annual National Adoption Day.  National Adoption Day in Los Angeles is a collaborative effort of Public Counsel, the Los Angeles Juvenile Court, the Alliance for Children's Rights and the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services.

The day would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of pro bono attorneys working with Public Counsel from the law firms of Bingham McCutchen; Katten Muchin Rosenman; Manatt, Phelps & Phillips; Morrison & Foerster; Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker; Proskauer Rose; Reed Smith; and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.  These attorneys not only succeeded in finalizing 62 adoptions on November 19th, but also spent months prior to Adoption Day advocating for regional center and mental health services, and access to medical treatment and specialized funding for children with special needs.

The adoption of 9 children age twelve and older provided an additional cause for celebration.  Too often adoption is only thought of for very young children, while all children need and deserve a permanent loving home.

"While this was a joyous day for the 130 children adopted, for each of those children, there are approximately four foster children in Los Angeles County in need of an adopting parent," said Karen Ullman, Supervising Attorney for the Adoptions Project.  "Anyone who wants to be a parent can apply to adopt a child from the foster care system."

The process is open to married and unmarried couples, same sex couples and single people of all income levels.  In addition, there are virtually no expenses involved in the adoptions, especially as free legal services to finalize the adoption are available.  Anyone interested in adopting can contact the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services at (888) 811-1121.
