Special Immigrant Juvenile Status Manual December 2010

This manual focuses on obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status ("SIJS") and lawful permanent residency for children through probate court guardianships.  It is written for attorneys handling cases pro bono through Public Counsel, and must be used with our 2010-2011 Guardianship of the Person Attorney Manual - available here.  This manual is designed to give a step-by-step overview of the SIJS process, both in the probate court guardianship stage and the immigration service stage.

This manual deals specifically with guardianships obtained at the Central District Courthouse in Los Angeles County and immigration applications adjudicated at the Los Angeles District Office of the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services ("CIS").  Practices outside of this county and this district office may vary.  For example, other probate courts may require a formal motion for a SIJS order and other CIS offices may adjudicate immigration petitions and applications differently.  This manual is designed to be a guide, not a substitute for your own research and attention to local practices.
