Guardianship of the Person-Attorney Manual

Guardianship of the person is a legal action designed to give someone other than the minor's parents the "care, custody, and control" of the minor.  It is often sought when the minor's parents are unwilling or unable to care for the child, or where parental control is detrimental to the child. This manual is intended for use by attorneys handling guardianship cases pro bono through Public Counsel, and is designed to give a step-by-step overview of the guardianship process.

This manual deals specifically with guardianships obtained at the Central District Courthouse in Los Angeles County.  Practices outside of this county may vary.  This manual is designed to be a guide, not a substitute for your own research and attention to local practices.
