Public Counsel President & CEO Hernan D. Vera Confirmed by Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Senate voted on June 22, 2010 to confirm Hernán D. Vera, President & CEO of Public Counsel, to the Board of Directors of the State Justice Institute. Vera was nominated for the post by President Obama on January 20, 2010.

The State Justice Institute is a non-profit corporation governed by an 11-member Board of Directors appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. It was established by federal law in 1984 to award grants to improve the quality of justice in state courts, and foster innovative, efficient solutions to common issues faced by all courts. SJI's offices are in Alexandria, Virginia.

"The State Justice Institute is excited that the President has nominated, and the Senate has confirmed, Hernán Vera to our Board of Directors," said Jonathan Mattiello, SJI Deputy Director and Executive Director Designee. "We look forward to working with him in promoting SJI's mission to improve the administration of justice in the state courts."

"I am absolutely thrilled to join the Board of SJI and assist in its critical work to increase access to justice," said Hernán. "SJI is on the cutting edge of national efforts to make our state courts more responsive to the needs of the community, and I am honored to be a part of its mission."

The Board and Staff of Public Counsel congratulate Hernán on his appointment.
