2010 Volunteer Gala

Public Counsel celebrated its volunteers, summer clerks, and interns at its 11th annual Volunteer Gala on November 10, 2010 at the Hotel Figueroa in downtown Los Angeles.

At the Gala, 17 volunteers (listed below) were honored for their extraordinary service to the community and are the 2010 "Volunteers of the Year" for their respective law projects. These honorees all made a remarkable impact on community members living at or below the poverty line in the past year. In the past year, more than 37,000 clients were served by Public Counsel with the help of over 3,700 volunteers.

"Our Volunteers of the Year are all extraordinary examples of the Los Angeles community's response to the urgent need for legal services for the poor," said Hernán Vera, President and CEO of Public Counsel, "but this year's Volunteer Gala really honors all our volunteers.  We're also celebrating the achievement of our "Run for Justice" Marathon fundraiser.  Over 400 volunteers raised over $70,000 for our work..  Many of this year's honorees have volunteered for years.  One honoree began her relationship with Public Counsel as a client in our Immigrants' Rights Project and two pro bono attorneys from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP have been the engine behind an extraordinary series of class action law suits in defense of hundreds of children throughout California.  Public Counsel and our clients are fortunate indeed to enjoy this level of excellence.  Our work would be impossible without our volunteers."
