Dear Friends:

This economy has been devastating for people in California and across the nation. More families are losing their jobs and homes, more children are losing out on their educational futures, more veterans are returning home to find fewer opportunities, and more businesses are struggling to get off the ground.

As the economic crisis has deepened, we have risen up to meet it.

In 2011, Public Counsel grew its staff to more than 100 and deepened the enormous base of pro bono support that is our engine of change.

But numbers don't tell the whole story of our impact. Public Counsel's story is written on the faces and in the voices of the people we serve.

More impact: Impact litigation affected tens of thousands of students, families and hard-working Californians in 2011. Click here to read the latest headlines.

More hope: The Public Counsel CARES program connects Angelenos in need with critical services. "When people get the benefits they need, it is life-changing," says Public Counsel volunteer Laura Graham. Visit our new Public Counsel CARES web page.

More learning: When you're trying to change children's futures, starting early matters. That's especially true in education. We launched a new effort to close the gap in quality early care in Southeast Los Angeles, where 1 in 5 children age 4 or younger has no access to neighborhood child-care. Check out our interactive child-care map.

More strong communities: We support community-based nonprofits and small businesses that are changing from the inside out. Watch a short video that Chinatown students in the Southeast Asian Community Alliance created about their neighborhood.

More help for immigrants: We run one of the nation's largest immigration asylum practices for victims of persecution, domestic violence or childhood abuse and neglect, and we are working to improve our nation's treatment of immigrants. Read staff attorney Talia Inlender's op-ed in the Los Angeles Times about "Immigrant Detainees, Lost in America."

More support for veterans: We deliver on our nation's promise to veterans and work in nearly 40 states to support veterans and their families. Read about a new project to help Hollywood veterans in need.

More fairness in our legal system: We help litigants better represent themselves through clinics in the California Court of Appeal and U.S. District Court. Click here to read about Public Counsel's work in the California Judicial Counsel's 2011 book, "Innovations in the California Courts" (pdf).
