Over the years Public Counsel and its staff have received numerous
national and local honors for outstanding work. Some of the awards
include:
On
March 27, 2003, Judy London, Directing Attorney of Public
Counsel’s
Immigrants’ Rights Project, was selected by the Daily Journal
Extra magazine as one of the state's 20 lawyers under the age of
40 who are "incredibly skillful...sure to make their mark
on the legal landscape."
March
29, 2003, Public Counsel was honored by the Black Law Students
Association of the University of West Los Angeles
School of Law for Public Counsel’s “commitment to providing
pro bono legal services.”
In
August 2002, Public Counsel's Pro Per Guardianship Clinic, a
special program of our Children's Rights Project, was
awarded the "2002 Measure of Success" award by the Los
Angeles Superior Court Probate Division.
In
May 2002, Mona Patel-Sikora, staff attorney
for Public Counsel's Immigrants' Rights Project, is named one
of the state's
Top 20 lawyers under the age of 40 by California Law Business for
her work on behalf of battered immigrant women.
In
April 2002, Public Counsel volunteer Phong Wong was acknowledged
by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for
her achievement as Los Angeles Superior Court Volunteer of the
Year. Ms. Wong assisted the Court’s Probate Division with
its Guardianship Program.
In
September 2001, Daniel Grunfeld, Public Counsel’s
President and CEO, was named for the fourth consecutive year as
one of California’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers” by
California Law Business Magazine.
In
May 2001, Public Counsel was honored by the California
Bankruptcy Forum for our Debtor Assistance
Project.
In
May 2001, Catherine Atkin, Directing Attorney for Public Counsel’s Child Care Law Project, is named one of the Top
20 lawyers under the age of 40 by California Law Business.
In
April 2001, the Los Angeles Department of Children and
Family Services recognized Public Counsel “for contributions
to children and families seeking permanency through adoption."
In
March 2001, Public Counsel’s Director of Litigation,
Paul Freese, was honored by the Commission for Children and Families
for his “valuable time, energy, commitment and insight.”
Received
the 2001 Ralph N. Kleps Award for our “Sara
Berman Adoption Saturdays” program.
In
December 2000, Public Counsel (as a firm) was named as one of
the year’s “Lawyers of the Year” by
California Lawyer Magazine.
In
May 2000, Public Counsel was a co-recipient of the
California Mental Health Advocates for Children and Youth’s “Services
Innovation Award” for our work to “help significantly
improve the quality of life for thousands of California’s
most vulnerable children.”
In
2000, Public Counsel received the National Association
of Counties (NACo) ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for our production
of Juvenile Dependency Court Education Videos.
In
May 1999, Public Counsel was honored in Washington,
D.C. with a national award for Public Service Excellence for our
work “on behalf of children being adopted from foster care.”
In
1999, Public Counsel received an “Award of Excellence” from
the Los Angeles Urban Funders for our contribution to the Matrix
project in Pacoima, California.
In
1999, Public Counsel was honored with the “Community
Corazones Unidos Award” by Info Line of Los Angeles, for
our commitment to improving the lives of the people of Los
Angeles through community partnerships.
In
1999, the American Society of Public Administration,
Los Angeles Chapter honored Public Counsel’s Adoptions Project
with the Winston Crouch Award for Innovation in Government, Child
Advocates Office and Friends of Child Advocates
In
1998 and 1999, Public Counsel was honored
by the County of Los Angeles' Board of Supervisors for our exemplary
work in
the Adoption Saturdays Project.
In
1998, Public Counsel staff member, Belen
Vargas, was honored with the Domestic Violence Impact Advocate
Award from Comision
Feminal by Senator Hilda Solis and Assemblymember Lucille Roybal-Allard.
In
1998, The Hon. Benjamin A. Aranda III
Outstanding Public Service Award was given to Public Counsel
staff member David Ackerly
for his work on the Los Angeles County Bar Association Homeless
Shelter Project.
In
1998, Public Counsel was a co-recipient of the Westside
Hunger and Shelter Coalition’s Community Service Award for
our work in homelessness prevention.
In
1998, Public Counsel received the PRODUCTIVITY
AND QUALITY AWARD, TOP TEN from the County of Los Angeles for
the Sara Berman
Adoption Saturdays.
In 1997, staff member Kenneth Babcock was awarded
the California Alliance Commission on Education (CACE) Award for “excellence
in Consumer Education.”
In
1997, staff member Paul Freese received the prestigious
UCLA Antonia Hernandez Public Interest Award for his “significant
contributions to Public Interest Law” on behalf of the homeless.
In
1994, Kenneth Babcock was recognized by the County
of Los Angeles for his outstanding efforts fighting elder abuse
as
a member of the County’s Fiduciary Abuse Specialists Team.
Public
Counsel was twice singled out on National Philanthropy Day for
Outstanding Achievement and the
Outstanding Founder Award,
in 1988 and 1990, respectively.
In
1987, Public Counsel’s Summer Law
Clerk Program received a commendation from the City Council of
the city of Los
Angeles for the law clerks' work on behalf of the homeless.
In
1980, The American Bar Association bestowed
its prestigious Harrison Tweed Award on Public Counsel for helping
realize the
American Ideal of Justice for All.
